Innovation in technology continues to gather pace and the global focus on Key Enabling Technologies gives our industry real opportunities to make a major impact on the way we live and work within a sustainable environment. By aligning and investing our resources we can deliver products and technologies that will help promote technological innovation in Wales.

The aim of the IQE Open Technology Challenge is to work together with academic institutions and businesses, from start-ups to multinationals, to enhance existing and develop new regional supply chains in Wales and beyond.

The IQE Open Technology Challenge sets out our commitment to work for a better world. The Challenge will focus on developing key enabling technologies for innovative solutions to address the Three Grand Challenges identified in the Science for Wales Strategy:

  • Healthcare,
  • advanced materials and engineering materials,
  • low carbon, energy and the environment.

Large vertical R&D structures are becoming less sustainable. Partners working together along end-to-end supply chains, from semiconductors and other base materials through to end products, who share a vision of collaborative innovation, can be in a stronger position to drive products to market faster.

This initiative has the potential to establish the essential the building blocks for developing a successful technology cluster in Wales that would have a global impact.

We are confident that the Open Technology Challenge has the potential to become a key stepping stone towards the establishment of a major technology cluster in the region, as well as building stronger links to the global technology community.

We already have a strong knowledge and skills base in Wales enabling a wide range of research activities. This is a great opportunity to bring together existing capabilities and contribute to the creation of next generation technologies for improving our lives and the environment.
